Licenses and credits

KanjiLock is built on work by other people. This page lists what it uses and under which terms. The app shows the same list in Settings, Sources and licenses.

About the dictionary content

Meanings, readings and example sentences come from community dictionaries and are shown as they are. They can have mistakes, so don't rely on them for anything important like legal, medical or official translations. The dictionary includes adult vocabulary. Words tagged vulgar, derogatory or sensitive are left out of the random daily word.

JMdict and KANJIDIC2

This application uses the JMdict/EDICT and KANJIDIC dictionary files. These files are the property of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, and are used in conformance with the Group's licence.

Changes made: the data was taken from the JSON releases of jmdict-simplified and condensed into a SQLite database. Only English meanings, the first three senses, up to four alternate spellings and one short example sentence per entry are kept. The resulting database is a derived work and is shared under the same CC BY-SA 4.0 license. You can get it from the source repository or extract it from the APK.

Tatoeba example sentences

Example sentences come from the Tatoeba Project under CC BY 2.0 FR. Each sentence in the app links to its page on Tatoeba, where its authors are credited.

jmdict-simplified

JSON conversion of JMdict and KANJIDIC2 by scriptin and contributors, github.com/scriptin/jmdict-simplified. The converted data keeps the CC BY-SA 4.0 license of the source dictionaries.
